1. Information we collect

Website information

When you visit theindian.com.au, we and our service providers may automatically receive technical information such as your IP address, browser and device type, operating system, approximate region, referring page, pages viewed, timestamps, cookie identifiers and interactions with the website. We may also collect information you voluntarily submit through a contact form, comment, subscription, listing enquiry or email.

Account and sign-in information

When you sign in to an app, we may receive your name, email address and a provider-specific account identifier from Sign in with Apple or Google Sign-In. Apple may provide a private relay email address instead of your personal email. We also create internal identifiers, including an account ID, app user ID, Community profile ID and Matrimony profile ID, and link them securely to the same account.

Profile and eligibility information

Depending on the features you use, we may collect your first and last name, email address, gender, date of birth or age-eligibility result, mother tongue, profile preferences and account settings. Date of birth or an age-range result is used to apply age restrictions and is not displayed publicly.

Location information

With your permission, the mobile app may collect device coordinates and derive your suburb or city, state and country. We may store the latest location and a timestamped location history when the named suburb, state or country changes. Location supports regional Community content, nearby Listings and Events, default state selection and service safety. Location history and precise coordinates are kept private and are not displayed in your public app profile. We do not use this feature to continuously track your movements.

Community information

If you use Community, we collect content and activity including posts, replies, hashtags, selected state and language, likes, reports, blocks, moderation status, bans, timestamps and notification preferences. Posts made anonymously display “Anonymous user” publicly, but remain linked to the account privately for safety, abuse prevention and moderation.

Listings, Events and Announcements

We collect information submitted to us for Listings or Events, including names, descriptions, categories, dates, addresses, contact details, links and optional images. Content submitted for publication may become public after review. Searches of downloaded Events and Listings are performed on the device. Calendar entries are created through the selected calendar interface and are not uploaded to our service by the app.

Matrimony information

Matrimony is opt-in and we do not create a Matrimony profile automatically. If you choose to use it, we may collect:

  • profile photographs and gallery photographs;
  • first name, age, gender, partner preference, height, optional weight, resident state, hometown, languages and citizenship;
  • profile descriptions, partner expectations and preferences;
  • optional visa, relationship status, education, occupation and matching information;
  • optional religion, community and caste information where you expressly choose to provide it;
  • interests sent and received, acceptances, declines, saved profiles, matches, blocks, reports and profile status;
  • private match messages and contact-sharing choices; and
  • moderation, review and safety history.

Some optional Matrimony details may be sensitive information under privacy law. We collect them only when you choose to add them, use them only for matching, filtering, profile display according to your controls, safety and support, and allow you to remove or withdraw them. Matrimony profiles may be manually reviewed before publication. An “Admin reviewed” indicator is not an identity verification guarantee.

Mobile verification

If you purchase and use mobile verification, we collect your country code and mobile number and send the number to Twilio Verify to deliver and check a one-time passcode. We store the verified number, verification country and time, and link it to your account identifiers. A one-way hash of a device identifier may be stored for account security and possible future account recovery. We do not store the one-time passcode. A verified number is shared with a match only when the applicable contact-sharing conditions and user consents are satisfied.

Purchases and subscriptions

Apple processes iOS in-app purchases and subscriptions. We receive product, transaction, subscription, entitlement, renewal, expiry, refund and revocation information required to provide paid features and prevent fraud. We do not receive or store your full payment-card details.

Device, notification and support information

We may collect an app installation or device identifier, push-notification token and notification choices. Our hosting, content-delivery and security providers may also process service-request information such as IP address, device or operating-system type, app version and security logs needed to operate or protect the Services. The current mobile apps do not include third-party advertising, cross-app tracking or general app analytics SDKs. If you contact support, we collect your email address, message, attachments, voluntarily provided diagnostics and related account information needed to respond.

2. How we collect information

We collect information:

  • directly from you when you create or edit a profile, post content, upload a photograph, verify a number, make a purchase, submit a report or contact support;
  • automatically from your browser, device and use of the Services;
  • from Apple or Google when you use their sign-in services;
  • from Apple in relation to purchases, subscriptions and age-eligibility information where supported; and
  • from administrators and moderation processes when content or profiles are reviewed.

3. How we use information

We use personal information to:

  • create, authenticate, secure and support accounts;
  • operate the website, apps, Community, Listings, Events, Announcements and Matrimony;
  • display information you choose to publish and provide privacy-safe previews;
  • personalise content by state, language, preferences and precise or coarse location;
  • administer profile review, interests, matches, messaging, contact sharing and subscriptions;
  • verify mobile numbers and display the appropriate verification badge;
  • send service, safety, support and optional notification messages;
  • detect duplicate accounts, spam, fraud, abuse, prohibited conduct and security incidents;
  • investigate reports, enforce rules, apply bans and keep audit records;
  • measure and improve website and service reliability and performance using information actually available to us;
  • respond to access, correction, deletion, complaint and support requests; and
  • comply with law, lawful requests and dispute-resolution requirements.

We do not sell personal information. As at the date of this policy, we do not use app profile information for third-party targeted advertising.

4. Cookies and website analytics

The website uses essential WordPress cookies and may use cookies or similar technologies for security, preferences and site operation. It also uses Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager to understand website traffic and use. Google may receive device, browser, interaction, cookie and IP-related information and process it under Google’s own terms and privacy policy.

You can limit cookies through your browser settings. Blocking essential cookies may affect website functionality. You may also use Google’s available browser controls or opt-out tools for Analytics.

Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager apply to the website and are not integrated as SDKs in the current mobile apps. We do not combine mobile-app profile information with third-party data for targeted advertising, share it with data brokers, or use it to track people across apps and websites owned by other companies.

5. Public information and user choices

Community posts, replies, public profile fields, approved Listings and Events may be visible to other users or website visitors. Do not publish personal information that you do not want others to see. Copies of public information may remain in screenshots, search results or third-party caches outside our control.

Matrimony profiles use specific visibility controls. We do not publicly display exact date of birth, personal account email, Apple or Google identifier, precise coordinates or an unshared mobile number. Free users may receive limited or blurred profile previews according to the product rules.

6. Automated rules and decision support

Software rules may use personal information to:

  • restrict Community access to eligible users aged 16 or older and Matrimony access to eligible users aged 18 or older;
  • apply account, subscription, interest-quota, duplicate-content, report-rate and ban rules;
  • sort or filter Community and Matrimony content using state, language, recency, relevance, gender or preferences selected by users; and
  • hide content after defined report or safety thresholds pending review.

Matrimony profile approval, reported-content decisions and significant moderation actions may involve administrator review. You may contact us if you believe an automated rule or moderation decision was applied incorrectly.

7. When we disclose information

We may disclose only the information reasonably required to:

  • other users, when you publish content, maintain a visible profile, match, or consent to contact sharing;
  • hosting, database, content-delivery, private object-storage, security, backup and technical service providers;
  • Apple and Google for authentication, app distribution, age eligibility, purchases and platform services;
  • Twilio and telecommunications providers for mobile-number OTP verification;
  • Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager for website measurement;
  • professional advisers, insurers, auditors or contractors who need access and are subject to appropriate obligations;
  • law-enforcement, regulators, courts or other parties where required or authorised by law, or where reasonably necessary to protect rights, safety and security; or
  • a purchaser or successor in connection with a proposed or completed business sale, merger or restructure, subject to appropriate confidentiality and privacy safeguards.

Third-party websites, calendar apps, map apps, businesses and event organisers have their own privacy practices. Opening or contacting them is governed by their policies, not this policy.

8. Overseas processing

Some service providers operate globally. Personal information may therefore be processed in Australia, the United States, India and other countries where Apple, Google, Cloudflare or another S3-compatible storage provider, Twilio, our hosting provider, or their subprocessors operate. Privacy protections in those countries may differ from Australian law. Where applicable, we take reasonable steps to select reputable providers, limit disclosed information and protect information handled overseas.

9. Data security

We use safeguards appropriate to the nature of the information, which may include encrypted network connections, access controls, authenticated APIs, short-lived access and media links, private photo storage, hashed identifiers, encrypted backups, moderation controls, logging and restricted administrator access. No website, app, transmission or storage system is completely secure.

If a data breach occurs, we will investigate and take appropriate action. Where required by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme or another applicable law, we will notify affected individuals and the relevant regulator.

10. Retention and deletion

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably required for the purposes described in this policy, account operation, safety, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, legal obligations and legitimate record keeping.

  • Active account and profile information is generally retained while the account or relevant profile remains active.
  • Daily operational backups are generally retained for up to 30 days before rotation. Deleted information may remain in protected backups until those backups expire.
  • When a Matrimony profile is deleted, its profile records, active photo records, interests, matches and associated conversations are scheduled for deletion from the active service. Limited audit, purchase, security or legal records may be retained where reasonably necessary.
  • When an app account or Community profile is deleted, private profile information and user-specific records are deleted or de-identified where appropriate. Existing public Community posts or replies may remain to preserve conversation integrity, but the author is changed to “Deleted user”.
  • Reports, moderation records, transaction records and security logs may be retained for longer where needed to prevent abuse, resolve disputes or comply with law.

Deleting the app from your device does not delete your account. Deleting an account from our Services does not delete your Apple or Google account.

11. Your rights and choices

Subject to applicable law, you may:

  • request access to personal information we hold about you;
  • request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information;
  • delete supported profiles or initiate account deletion in the app;
  • request deletion by emailing us if you cannot access the in-app process;
  • withdraw consent for optional sensitive Matrimony details or remove those details;
  • pause or delete a Matrimony profile;
  • control profile visibility, contact sharing, location permission and notifications;
  • block or report another user; and
  • make a privacy complaint.

To protect accounts, we may ask you to verify your identity before acting on an access, correction or deletion request. Some information cannot be corrected directly where it is locked for safety or age-compliance purposes; contact support for assistance.

12. Account and data deletion requests

You can initiate account deletion from the app under Settings → Delete Account. You can delete a Matrimony profile separately from Matrimony → My Profile → Profile Settings.

If you cannot access the app, email theindiancommunity.abroad@gmail.com with the subject Account and data deletion request. State whether you want to delete your main app account, Community profile, Matrimony profile or all associated data. Do not send your password or one-time passcode.

13. Children and age restrictions

The Community feature is available only to eligible users aged 16 or older. Matrimony is available only to eligible adults aged 18 or older. We may use a confirmed date of birth or an age-eligibility result supplied through a supported platform API to enforce these restrictions.

The news website is intended for a general audience. Children should not create app accounts, submit personal information or use interactive features without appropriate parent or guardian involvement where required. If you believe we have collected information from an ineligible child, contact us promptly.

14. Communications

We may send transactional messages about authentication, safety, moderation, purchases, interests, matches, messages, reports and support. Optional notifications can be controlled in the app or device settings. If we offer marketing emails, you may unsubscribe using the link in the message or by contacting us. We will still send essential account or safety communications where permitted.

15. Privacy complaints

Send privacy questions or complaints to the contact below. Include enough information for us to understand the issue, but do not send passwords or one-time passcodes. We will acknowledge and investigate complaints and aim to respond within 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).

16. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when our Services, providers or legal obligations change. The current version will be published at theindian.com.au with a revised “Last updated” date. If a change materially affects how we handle information, we may also provide notice in the app or request renewed consent where appropriate.
