Australia 407 Visa Changes: Indian Applicants’ November 2026 Checklist

Indian applicants considering occupational training in Australia have an important date to check: 12 November 2026. From that day, new applicants for the Training visa (subclass 407) must be outside Australia both when they apply and when their visa is granted.

For Indian graduates, professionals and families already living here, the change makes lawful visa status, sponsor approvals and travel planning central to any proposed application. A training arrangement alone is not enough to keep someone lawfully in Australia.

The Department of Home Affairs sets out the requirements in its official guidance on the 407 application changes. Here is a practical checklist for the Indian community in Australia.

What changes on 12 November?

For applications made from 12 November 2026, Home Affairs says:

  • You must be outside Australia when applying. Someone currently in Australia will need to leave before lodging a new application under these rules.
  • You must also be outside Australia at grant. Being offshore only on the day of application does not satisfy both requirements.
  • An onshore application will be invalid. This applies even if ImmiAccount allows you to submit it.

That last point is particularly important. A website accepting a submission is not proof that an application is legally valid. Home Affairs warns that an invalid application may affect visa status and that a decision declaring an application invalid cannot be merits reviewed.

Already applied? Check validity and lodgement date

The new rules do not apply to a valid Training visa application submitted before 12 November 2026. Home Affairs says those applications will continue to be assessed under the rules in place when they were lodged.

However, that protection depends on a valid application, not simply starting an online form. The department also highlights requirements introduced on 11 March 2026: the sponsor must already be approved as a temporary activities sponsor, and the training nomination must be approved before the visa application is made, unless the sponsor is a Commonwealth agency.

Do not rush an incomplete or ineligible application just to beat the date. If sponsorship or nomination approval is still pending, obtain advice about what can lawfully be lodged and when.

A preparation checklist for applicants in Australia

1. Confirm your current visa position

Check your visa expiry date and conditions through Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) and your grant notice. Discuss your individual circumstances with a registered migration agent or Australian legal practitioner if your visa is close to expiry.

Home Affairs advises applicants preparing to apply offshore to leave before their current visa expires. If your visa has already expired, the department warns that you may not be eligible to apply for another visa. Seek individual advice promptly rather than assuming a proposed 407 application resolves your status.

2. Obtain approval evidence from your sponsor

Confirm the required sponsorship and nomination approvals before organising an application. Ask for the relevant approval details, clarify the proposed training start date and make sure the arrangement matches the application being prepared.

3. Prepare documents before travelling

Home Affairs recommends gathering the application documents before leaving Australia and checking whether a health examination is needed and can be completed beforehand. Keep secure copies of your passport, approvals and supporting records accessible while overseas.

4. Budget for an uncertain return date

Allow for flights, accommodation and living costs outside Australia. Processing times vary, and lodging an application does not guarantee approval. The department specifically advises against arranging return travel around an expected grant date.

Will an offshore application give you a bridging visa?

No bridging visa is linked to a Training visa application lodged outside Australia. Applicants should not assume an offshore 407 application creates permission to return, remain or work in Australia while waiting.

Home Affairs says applicants may travel to Australia on another valid visa during processing, but must comply with that visa’s conditions. They must still be outside Australia when the Training visa is granted. This is not a blanket ban on all travel during processing, nor a guarantee that another visa will be available.

What employers and families should do now

Training sponsors should review approval timelines and proposed commencement dates with applicants. Families should discuss the practical implications of time overseas, including caring responsibilities, rent and existing work commitments, before making non-refundable bookings.

For Indian Australians helping a relative or colleague, share the official guidance rather than treating a social-media deadline reminder as personalised migration advice. Check a migration agent’s registration through the official Home Affairs guidance on using an agent.

The takeaway: establish your current lawful status, confirm the required approvals and plan around the offshore application and grant requirements before committing to travel or training. These Australia migration updates concern the subclass 407 pathway; they should not be assumed to change every other visa.
