Telangana Man Killed in Philadelphia Delivery Shooting: What Indian Families Abroad Should Know

A 28-year-old Indian man from Telangana, identified in multiple reports as Kuncha Anshul, has been shot dead in Philadelphia while working a late-night pizza delivery shift, in a case that has deeply shaken Indian communities abroad.

According to reports from Hindustan Times, The Indian Express, The Hindu and other Indian media citing local authorities and family members, Anshul was killed in North Philadelphia after delivering pizzas to what investigators believe may have been a vacant apartment. Police are examining whether the order was used to lure him to the location.

What happened in Philadelphia

Anshul, originally from Gundlapochampally in Telangana’s Medchal-Malkajgiri district near Hyderabad, had moved to the United States in 2023 for higher studies. Family members told media that he had completed engineering in Hyderabad before pursuing a master’s degree in business administration in the US. He was reportedly employed with a multinational company and took weekend pizza delivery work to supplement his income.

The shooting reportedly occurred around 12.30am on Friday, 5 June local time, at the Raymond Rosen Homes complex in North Philadelphia. Reports citing police said he had been delivering three pizzas to an apartment unit that was later found to be vacant. He was found with a close-range gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators reportedly recovered spent shell casings from the scene and are reviewing surveillance footage. Several reports say police are looking into whether two masked individuals followed him before the shooting. Authorities are also said to be tracing the phone number and delivery details linked to the order.

Family says it was not a robbery

Anshul’s family has rejected the suggestion that the killing was a routine robbery. His sister, Tanvi, told reporters that valuables were not taken and alleged that the delivery order appeared to be a “trap” designed to draw him to a deserted location. She said the family had been informed that nobody was actually present at the delivery address.

Family members have appealed to Indian and state authorities for help in bringing Anshul’s mortal remains home and for a thorough investigation. The Consulate General of India in New York has said it is in touch with the family and is extending assistance.

Why this story matters to Indian families overseas

For Indian communities in Australia, the case is painfully familiar in a broader sense: many young migrants and international students take casual, delivery, hospitality, rideshare, warehouse or night-shift jobs while studying or building a new life overseas. Most work safely and responsibly, but late-night work can expose people to isolated locations, unpredictable customers and limited support in emergencies.

This does not mean families should respond with fear or discourage young people from studying abroad. It does mean students, new migrants, employers and community groups should take safety planning seriously, especially for shift work after dark.

Practical safety reminders for students and workers

Community organisations supporting Indian students and migrants in Australia often encourage simple but important precautions for late-night work:

  • Share live location with a trusted friend or family member during late shifts.
  • Avoid entering dark or isolated buildings if the delivery address looks unsafe or abandoned.
  • Call the customer from a safe public spot if an address seems suspicious.
  • Follow employer safety procedures and report unsafe delivery locations.
  • Keep emergency contacts saved and easy to call.
  • For rideshare or delivery work, take note of suspicious patterns such as vacant addresses, repeated changed locations or customers refusing to meet in visible areas.

In Australia, anyone in immediate danger should call 000. For non-urgent police assistance, call 131 444. International students can also contact their university support office, student union, community association or local Indian consular service for guidance after serious incidents.

A moment for community solidarity

Anshul’s death is now the subject of an active police investigation in Philadelphia. Until authorities confirm motive and identify suspects, the facts should be treated carefully and without speculation. What is clear is that a young Indian man’s life has been cut short, leaving his family, friends and wider diaspora community grieving.

For Indians in Australia, the tragedy is a reminder to look out for students and new migrants doing late-night work, to check in on friends who live alone, and to build stronger community support networks. Safety is not only an individual responsibility; it is also something families, employers and community groups can help strengthen together.
